It was decided today by the organisers of the Varsity Cup today that the Varsity Cup, as well as the Varsity Shield, will take place in 2021. However, the Young Guns competition was cancelled for the 2021 season.
No list of fixtures has been released as a final decision regarding the Covid19 protocols that will be required is still outstanding. SA Rugby has written to the Minister of Sport to approve the protocols.
The tournaments will take place in a bubble, which will likely be hosted at Tukkies with all the competing teams to play three games during a week. After every week of competition, the teams will return home for two weeks before travelling to Tukkies for the next round.
Promotion and relegation will be played over a two-year log combined system (2021 & 2022).
The Board will convene late February to discuss the Covid19 protocols as well as make a decision on issues such as the "First-Year Rule" and transformation targets.
The earliest the Varsity Cup can start will be in the first week of April 2021 due to return to play protocols set by SARU.
