The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed the suspension of three schoolboy rugby players that attended the Youth Weeks in July 2022. These were three of the four rugby players that tested positive for banned substances for the period April 2022 - November 2022. The fourth player was a Varsity Cup player.
A three (3) year sanction from all sport on the South African Rugby (SAR) player, Sifiso Blessing Magwaza, following an anti-doping rule violation at SA Schools Craven Week. Mr Magwaza tested positive for the presence of Metandienone Metabolite, Metandienone LTM (17β-OH-methyl-17α-methyl-18-nor-androst-1,4,13-triene-3-one. His period of ineligibility began on 4th August 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 4th August 2025.
Magwaza was one of the stars of Monnas at loosehead prop and was selected for the SA Schools team that played against the SA Schools "A" side on 16 July at Hamilton Rugby Club in Green Point, Cape Town. Magwaza was also included in the SA u/18 team to face England and France at Paarl Gimnasium on 19,23 and 27 August 2022, however, was withdrawn from the squad before the matches were played.
A three (3) year sanction from all sport on the South African Rugby (SAR)player, Khoitsimodimo Mathibedi, following an anti-doping rule violation at SA Schools Craven Week. Mr Mathibedi tested positive for the presence of Metandienone metabolite metandienone LTM (17β-OH-methyl- 17α-methyl-18-nor-androst-1,4,13-triene-3-one). His period of ineligibility began on 22nd August 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 22nd August 2025.
A three (3) year sanction from all sport on the South African Rugby (SAR) for a minor (protected person) player, following an anti-doping rule violation. The minor tested positive for the presence of 19-norandrosterone. Their period of ineligibility began on 19th September 2022 (the date of notification of provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 19th September 2025.
The fourth player suspended was Varsity Cup player Andre Gerber. A three (3) year sanction from all sport on the South African Rugby (SAR) player, Andre Gerber, following an anti-doping rule violation at Varsity Cup level. Mr. Gerber tested positive for the presence of Oxandrolone Metabolites, 17β-hydroxymethyl-17α-methyl- 18-nor-2-oxa-5α-androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M1) and 17α-hydroxymethyl- 17β-methyl-18-nor-2-oxa-5α-androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M2). His period of ineligibility began on 19th September 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 19th September 2025.
