The Nashua Maluti Rugby Tournament 2017

2017 Nashua Vryheid Dag2 411

The Nashua Maluti Rugby Tournament celebrated its 30th year in 2017 and although not much attention is given to this tournament in the national set-up of schoolboy rugby it is very important for the development of rugby at the schools in the Northern Natal area.

Since 1988 one hundred and five schools participated in this tournament from across the country. A school like Affies is playing an important role in this tournament as for the past twelve years they send two teams, the third and fourth with players from the 2nd team who is not involved with the Witbulle's squad for the Easter Tournaments.

Affies believes this exposure against other school's first XV players gives their boys a chance to showcase their talent and to measure themselves against other school's top players. Nobody will ever mention that the fun and experience to participate in rugby tournaments is also a major contributor for their participation.

Some big names that participated in this tournament are reflected on the trophy's up for grabs during the week. Names like Pat Lambie (Michaelhouse), Ruan Combrink (Michaelhouse), Cecil Africa (Harmonie), Rosco Spekman (Harmonie), Ashley Johnson (Paarl Gim), Craig Burden (Maritzburg College), Gary Botha (Waterkloof) together with referees Stuart Berry en Ruben Rossouw.

Trophies are given for the following categories.
• Hoerskool Vryheid Trophy – Winners of the week
• Adidas Trophy – Player of the week
• Piet Roux Shield – Most outstanding team
• Joe Dyer Trophy – Most tries scored by a player
• ABSA Bank Trophy – Most attractive rugby
• SA Home Loans Trophy – Player who scored the most points

Affies and their boy's names appear on several trophies including the Hoerskool Vryheid Trophy awarded to the winner of the week in 2010 and 2016. The ABSA Bank Trophy awarded for the most attractive rugby Affies appears in 2013, 2016 and 2017 and the Joe Dyer Trophy awarded for the most tries scored in 2006, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. On the Adidas Trophy awarded to the player of the week appears the names of Gary Botha, Cecil Arika, Ruan Combrinck, PatLambie together with the boys from Affies (2012) H. Lombaard, (2016) Divan de Nysschen and (2017) Peet Pienaar. (2016) Divan de Nysschen and (2017) SD Meyer is the two Affies boys who's names appear on the SA Home Loans Trophy awarded for the most points scored.

Affies is known across South Africa to make friends with their brand of rugby they play but the boys are even more known for making lifelong friends wherever they represent their school. One such friendship is that with Dewald Buys. Dewald is a disabled young man with an unbelievable knowledge of rugby. Since Affie's first appearance at Vryheid in 2005 Dewald adopted Affies and supports the teams during the whole tournament. Dewald received several souvenirs from the Affies boys and Affies is proud to have him as part of the Affies community.

Vryheid Nashua Maluti Rugby Tournament is such a favourite in the Affies community because here you can still support your child from your gazebo with a "braaivleis" and some cold refreshments at hand. Maybe this is the way schoolboy rugby is supposed to be celebrated, without the hype and pressure to perform on the boys with parents just supporting their children.

The organisers can be proud of this tournament and it is in the interest of rugby in Northern Natal that schools be motivated to participate in this tournament to ensure its survival, to ensure that boys can look back on this weekend with great memories.

And if anybody wants to accuse me of giving Affies free advertisement on the way they provide wonderful opportunities for ALL of their boys, you are wrong. They do not need to advertise this IT IS A WELL KNOWN FACT.
