The Lions’ Road To The SARU u/20 Championship

 

The Lions u/20 have not lost a single game this season and will host DHL Western Province u/20, the only other unbeaten team in the SARU u/20 Championship in the final in Johannesburg on Saturday.

With five wins and one draws in the league phase of the season, the Lions u/20 finished first on the standings and hosted their semifinal against the Sharks u/20 in Johannesburg

.A comfortable 59-18 win in that play-off saw them secure a spot in the final which will kick off at 13h00 on Saturday.

We took a closer look at how they got there, by running through all seven of their games.

Semi-final - Lions u/20 59 - 18 Cell C Sharks u/20.

The Lions scored two early tries and led 17-03 after just 14 minutes into the match. The Sharks scored two tries themselves to narrow the gap to 15-20 and 17 minutes left of the first half.

Unfortunately, thereafter it was the Lions u/20 that ran amock. The halftime score was 33-18 and the Lions just kept on the pressure for the rest of the match.

The Lions u/20 outscored their visitors with 5 tries to 2 and scored 26 unanswered points in the second half to secure the home final.

Round 7 - Lions u/20 53 - 20 Eastern Province u/20

As expected the Lions u/20 did beat Eastern Province u/20 will relative ease. The Lions u/20 already led 31-10 at halftime and cruised the second half to win 53-20 outscoring the visitors with 9 tries to the 3 scored by Eastern Province u/20.

Round 6 - Leopards u/20 32 - 43 Lions u/20

The Lions outscored the Leopards 27-7 in the second half of their match to snatch a dramatic win in Potchefstroom. 

The team from North West will kick themselves however for blowing a 25-7 lead at the break, which allowed the Lions to come storming back to grab the win.

The home side's forward pack had early dominance and scored all four tries through the pack, but once the Lions managed to free their outside backs, the Leopards were in trouble and conceded three tries out wide.

Round 5 - Lions u/20 24 -  24 DHL Western Province u/20

A second-half comeback by WP saw them almost snatching the win away from the Lions, who were top of the log before this match. 

The men from Johannesburg were leading 17-7 at the break and then scored early in the second half to move 24-7 ahead before the Cape side started their comeback.

Junior Bok flanker Izan Esterhuizen's yellow card complicated matters for the Lions, as replacement hooker Lukhanyo Vokozela and replacement prop Jacques Rossouw scored before wing Rethabile Louw got the bonus point try for the visitors. The conversion was wide, and WP left Johannesburg with their second draw in the competition.

Jurich Claasens had a productive day for the home team though, with the Lions flyhalf scoring 17 points through two tries, two conversions and a penalty goal to move top of the points' scoring list with 47 points so far this season.

 Round 4 - Toyota Free State u/20 19 - 46 Lions u/20 

The Lions travelled to Bloemfontein on Saturday and returned from the Toyota Stadium with a full house of points in their win over the Toyota Free State. 

The visitors ran in eight tries and conceded three in a commanding display. Five of those tries came from the backs, but neither of their two impressive midfielders, Henco van Wyk and Tyler Bocks, managed to cross the try line.

Round 3 - Lions 27 - 15 Cell C Sharks 

The Lions not only secured a four-try bonus-point win at Emirates Airline Park, but they also managed to keep the Cell C Sharks from gaining any log points from the trip, a result that saw the Durbanites drop out of the top four.

Things were still pretty even at the break, with both teams scoring two tries to tie at 12-all, but the second half proved the big difference in the result. The Lions backline got the upper hand over their opponents and claimed two more tries, while the visitors could only respond with a penalty goal.

Round 1 - Vodacom Bulls u/20 30 - 32 Lions u/20

The Lions delivered a warning to the other sides in the competition by beating the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria, by 32-30 thanks to a brilliant comeback in the second half.

The home side held a 17-8 lead at the break, but could not contain their visitors in the second half of a very tight match, with a conversion proving the difference between the sides.

It is clear that the Jozi side, loaded with Junior Springboks, will be a serious contender to lift the Cup at the end of the competition.
