The King Is Dead Long Live The King

DHL Stormers coach Rito Hlungwani confirmed that Deon Fourie will not be available for selection for the rest of the remainder of the season after suffering a broken tibia in their United Rugby Championship win over Connacht on Saturday.

"Broken tibia… probably the season. Losing a player of Deon’s calibre and experience is a major blow."

Hlungwani said that Fourie had taken his immediate successor, Paul de Villiers, under his wings.

"He was in the office today analysing the game with Paul de Villiers, so we still have him in that regard. It’s just tricky and tough not having him on the field. We’re moving forward, and he’s helping us move forward in the right way."

"It was Paul De Villiers’ first start after playing a couple of games off the bench, and I thought it was quite impressive. I thought he did well."

"Paul, like all good openside flanks, has a very high work rate, but he also has a really good tackle technique. He is always first to the breakdown, and it is nice to have him in the mauls."

"His carrying technique means we can build momentum nicely and early from the mauls."

Evan Roos said that although the injury to Fourie is sad, he is excited for Paul De Villiers to develop as the Stormers' first-choice at six.

"It’s sad to see someone get injured. It doesn’t matter who it is. I really feel for him, and I hope everything goes well and smoothly."

"I really feel for Deon. In terms of leadership, he’s always been a big voice in our group. He naturally brings calmness with his experience, and now that we are heading into the deciding part of the season, that will be missed."

"I’m really excited for Paul. He’s a good player, a good man, and I’m happy for him to get an opportunity. He works hard, and he’s always keen to learn, which is always good to see when someone just gets into the system."
