Tafel Lager Griquas Surprise DHL Western Province

DHL Western Province hosted the Tafel Lager Griquas at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday in Round 4 of the Carling Currie Cup. Tafel Lager Griquas scored the winning points with a try in the last seconds of the game to win 30-28.

Western Province was the log leader of the 2021 Carling Currie Cup with 11 points with Griquas on 6 points after the same number of games played (3).

The wholesale changes made by Griquas for this match seemed to have made a difference, as the first half surprisingly saw very equal possession and territorial play from both teams, who each conceded a number of penalties and scored from the resultant opportunities. The second half saw very little change in the pattern of play with both teams continuing to concede an unacceptable number of penalties. The quality of the match deteriorated with unforced errors and silly penalties from both sides. Griquas capitalised on the penalties of Western Province to win the match in extra time 30-28.

06:10 Western Province drew first blood after JJ Kotze scored the first try. Converted by Tim Swiel (7-0).

40:00 The scoreboard kept ticking over for both teams who continued to capitalise on penalties and poor defence. The Griquas yellow card made it easier for Western Province to score their last try of the first half.

41:55 Western Province scored the first point of the second half after being awarded a kickable penalty for offside play by Griquas just outside their 22-meter line. Penalty successfully kicked by Tim Swiel (25-17).
