Tafel Lager Griquas announced the appointment of highly successful Varsity Cup Head Coach of CUT, Pieter Bergh as the new Head Coach for the 2022 season. Pieter has signed a contract with the Union that will keep him in Kimberïey at least for the next 3 years. Pieter Bergh’s duties as Head Coach will commence on 1 October 2021.
“We feel very fortunate to have Pieter back in our structures, as he knows Kimberley and more importantly the game of rugby very well. After a very successful 2021 season, we need a Head Coach who is capable of taking the team to the next level and we feel Pieter is the right man to do so. On behalf of the Union, I would also like to thank Scott and Albert for their hard work and dedication in their respective roles. They came in at a difficult time and did extremely well with the team. They can be very proud of what they have achieved with the team, and they will be sorely missed by everyone at Griquas.” said Tafel Lager Griquas CEO, Arni van Rooyen.
Pieter will be assisted by former Southern Kings and Canon Eagles Forwards Coach, Barend Pieterse. Barend, a former player and Springbok himself, is considered as one of the best Lineout Specialists in the Country. Brendell Brandt, a former Griquas player will continue as Assistant Coach. The rest of the Coach1ng Staff will be announced after consultation w1th the Head Coach.
“I have enjoyed every moment working at the Gr1quas and am extremely proud of the Management Staff and the players for all their efforts over the last three years. I cannot thank the board and CEO - Arni enough for all the support they have shown me, they allowed me to grow as a coach and achieve such an exceptional season with the team. I wiII always hold Griquas close to my heart and will never forget the great memories I have made here” said, Scott Mathie.
“After 7 years as an Assistant Coach earlier in my career at Griquas, I really look forward to returning to Kimberley and to start working with the players and Management Team. It is a mass1ve honour to be appointed as Head Coach of Tafel Lager Griquas and I will do my utmost best to build on the good wor1 that has been done at the Union over the last couple of years. I truly believe that I can take this team to the next level. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the players and fellow coaches and management of CUT for the 3 wonderful years my family and I had in Bloemfontein. It was one of the best times of my life and it will always have a special place in my heart.° said Bergh.
Tales Lager Griquas continue to be a breading ground for players and coaches respectively, with the likes of Kobus van der Merwe, Swys de Bruin, Dawie Theron, Pote Human, Hawies Fourie and Scott Mathie, all establishing themselves as top-class coaches whilst in Kimberley.
