South African rugby supporters are buzzing with the news that Springbok head coach, Rassie Erasmus admitted he prefers a South African based captain.
Siya Kolisi was Erasmus' preferred captain throughout the Erasmus-era, however, however, he is now playing his rugby in France with Racing 92 and Erasmus admitted that a big decision still needs to be made on the Bok leadership group ahead of this year’s Tests.
“This is a unique situation. He will be considered and I think he will play some Test matches. He definitely wants to and he is playing well enough. If we get the feeling that it’s doable, maybe there’s place for that. But I still have to suss it out.”
“However, I would always like to have our captain locally based,” Erasmus explained. “Just because it’s a call and a flight and we can have a weekend together where we can plan.
“There’s a lot of players who have signed with overseas clubs with clauses in their contracts that say they will stop playing international rugby."
“Obviously, the club will give them more money because he will be available whenever they need him."
"Siya has not signed with a clause like that, ... that’s the first thing that tells you he wants to play for South Africa. I think he is playing some of his best rugby. He looks really relaxed."
