As part of the Vodacom URC’s Origin Rounds, we are looking at some of the famous local rugby schools that have produced DHL Stormers over the years. This week we feature Paul Roos Gimnasium.
In Rounds 10 and 11, the Vodacom URC has invited teams, players and fans to celebrate the communities and people who helped launch the careers of hundreds of rugby players and coaches.
From #GrassrootsToGreatness the Vodacom URC will shine a spotlight on the identities of the clubs, schools and communities that do an incredible job of giving children the chance to first pick up a rugby ball and guide the lucky few good enough to reach the elite level.
Named after the famous Springbok captain who was the first man to lead the national side on an overseas tour in 19-6, Paul Roos has always been synonymous with rugby.
Originally founded in 1866 as Stellenboch Gimnasium, it was renamed in 1940 after the former student, teacher and school rector Paul Roos.
The school predated Stellenbosch University, with the tertiary institution ultimately evolving out of the school, with which it shares the famous maroon jersey.
Known as a factory of talent, there have been over 50 Springbok rugby players that attended Paul Roos, while there are six old boys in the current DHL Stormers squad in Damian Willemse, Herschel Jantjies, Dan du Plessis, Ben-Jason Dixon, JJ Kotze and Chad Solomon.
The Markotter Field, named after renowned Maties coach and selector A.F Markotter (known as Oubaas Mark), are known for the surrounding beauty and rich rugby heritage.
Rugby at Paul Roos has a rich history and given the continued excellence and considerable talent produced at the school, that legacy looks set to continue for some time to come.
