The Sigma Lions travelled to Kimberley to face a confident Tafel Lager Griquas side. A great 1st half by the Lions gave them a big enough margin to beat Griquas 45-42 for their second win of the 2021 Carling Currie Cup Season.
The Lions started like a house on fire and established an early lead of 28-07 at the halftime break. A great display by the Lions of 15 man rugby saw them ending the first half in complete control.
Griquas scored two early tries in the second half, however, the Lions managed to hang on to score their second win of the season.
11:24 Andre Warner scored the Lions first try after a period on the attack, (00-07).
13:55 The Griquas struck back immediately when the Lions could not win the kick-off. Great handling by several players with Enver Brandt forcing his way over, bursting through several tackles, (07-07).
20:00 The game moved from one side of the pitch to the other as the boot of the flyhalves try to gain territorial advantage. Both teams had their chances at this stage and a 07-07 score is a fair reflection at that stage.
22:50 Duncan Matthews scored the Lions 2nd try after some dismal defence from Griquas out wide, (07-14).
27:10 The 3rd try for the Lions by Carly Sadie as the Lions' attack kept on finding holes in Griquas' defence, (07-21).
32:38 The bonus point try for the Lions when Duncan Matthews scored his second try of the match. The Lions are on fire with the gaps in the Griquas defensive lines increasing, (07-28).
40:00 The Lions were in complete control at that stage with injuries costing the Griquas momentum. A 15 man game played by the Lions with Carlu Sadie a star upfront.
46:43 Mox Mxoli scored the Griquas 2nd try after a determined attack from the kick-off by Griquas, (14-28).
51:47 Jordan Hendrikse converted his 1st penalty of the day, (14-31).
54:01 A yellow card to Ruan Dreyer of the Lions.
55:16 Griquas applied the pressure from the yellow card and Raegan Oranje scored the 3rd try for Griquas as the Lions ran out of defenders, (21-31).
58:25 Jordan Hendrikse scored the Lions 5th try, (21-38).
60:00 Griquas started the second half like a team on a mission and scored two early tries. With 20 minutes to go the Lions seemingly are busy clawing themselves back into the game.
65:57 The Griquas ran out of players and had to play Hanru Sirgel, loosie, on the wing. Sirgel immediate used his chances to score Griquas' 4th try, (28-38).
71:21 Ruhan Staueli score a great try for the Lions. The Lions scored almost every time they got an opportunity, (28-45).
75:01 Ederies Arendse over for Griquas' 5th try with Rabz Maxwane (Lions) receiving a yellow card, (35-45).
79:25 Eduan Keyter scored a brilliant long-distance try and converted his own try.
