Several Varsity Cup Coaches Sacked To Avoid Automatic Relegation

Several new Varsity Cup coaches were appointed during the past few months as the Varsity Cup teams prepare for a do-or-die season in 2022.

At the beginning of the 2021 season, it was announced that there will be no promotion/relegation matches at the end of the 2021 season. However, the two teams with the combined lowest league points for the 2021 and 2022 seasons will automatically be relegated to the Varsity Shield competition.

Only at the end of the 2023 season will there be promotion and relegation opportunities. The highest placed Varsity team will automatically be promoted to the Cup division while the lowest-ranked team in the Cup competition will automatically be relegated to the Shield Competition.

These "new promotion/relegation" regulations, has seen several of the lower rank teams appointing new coaches to avoid the relegation that is looming.

The Madibaz appointed David Manuel in the place of Andre Tredoux. Manuel previously coached at TUKS and the Bulls.

Tredoux returned to his old alma mater and was appointed as head coach at the Shimlas with Swys de Bruin appointed as their Director of Rugby.

CUT Ixias' head coach, Pieter Bergh was appointed as the new head coach of Griquas. Bergh was replaced by ex Springbok Braam van Straaten.

UJ replaced Dewy Swartbooi with Jonothan Mokuena as head coach. Mokuena previously coached NWU to what is still their only Varsity Cup title in 2016. He has also coached North-West’s provincial team, the Leopards.

At Wits Hugo van As is still head coach but lost the services of assistant coach and his brother Etienne van As.

Maties are also ready to announce some changes with the current Head Coach, Drickus Hancke rumoured to be replaced by Assistant Coach Norman Jordaan. Hatting is said to be promoted to Director of Rugby is the rumour.
