Since the restart of rugby after COVID19 restrictions, the quality of local as well as international referee's was well below standard and sometimes bordering the absurd.

However, it all boiled over after Lomas from New Zealand was given a yellow card after visibly making contact with a player of Argentina. After deliberation between the TMO and referee, it was decided that a yellow card sufficient.

Hours later Bulls prop Jaques van Rooyen "tackled" a Western Province player and was sent off with a red card. The TMO proposed a yellow card but after "negotiations" he was convinced by the referee on the field that a red card is warranted.

After reviewing the incident, the SARU disciplinary committee suspended van Rooyen for only one week after finding mitigating circumstances.

The decision by the disciplinary committee can be interpreted as a vindication of the public's uproar after the decision of referee AJ Jacobs actions.
