Preview – Outeniqua vs Grey College – The King Is Alive And Well

Outeniqua will host Grey College in George in what is said to be the battle for the crown of 1stXV rugby in South Africa and maybe the world.

Grey College and Outeniqua have played each other 10 times already with Outeniqua beating Grey College in 2005 and 2013.

The unbeaten Grey College have played six matches in 2023 already. Their 33-12 win against Paarl Gim was worldwide said to be the best schoolboy rugby match in ages, while their match against Maritzburg College was a "cheat sheet" on how to beat Grey Collge.

Grey College is playing like a team who does not doubt its abilities and physically dominates its opponents before taking them apart piece by piece. A brilliantly balanced team with maybe a bit vulnerable out wide.

Outeniqua is also unbeaten after four matches with their brilliant comeback effort against Monnas at the Noord/Suid Rugby Festival their best performance of the year.

Outeniqua has shown against Monnas that can absorb the physical of the best in South Africa to pull it back in the second half to win with relative ease. However, to compare Grey College's physical abilities in the attack and defence to that of Monnas is maybe a bit delusional.

Maritzburg College has shown a few shortcomings of Grey College and did exploit their "lack" of speed out wide, they also showed in order to beat Grey one must be in their face for 70 minutes of the match.

Expect Grey to come out firing in the first half and let's see if Outeniqua will be able to fight their way back to a win. However, the king of 1stXV rugby in South Africa is a long way from dead and buried.
