The average reader of schoolboy rugby websites tends to forget the smaller schools who also play rugby and that these children also give 100% every time they run on to play.
The Pirates School Challenge is a competition for the less known schools to also have their time in the spotlight and for the boys who is more than often overlooked when selections are made for the provincial teams to earn some exposure.
Why the Pirates School Challenge?
- In an effort to market Pirates Rugby Club to the local schools the club approached a number of schools in the area and the feedback was amazing.
- The PSC was born and is now heading into its 6th year.
- The PSC basically takes the historic “friendlies” between the non-traditional rugby schools and puts a value on them.
- It is played over 2 pools and the finals are played at Pirates under lights on a Wednesday and Friday in June.
- The competing schools have seen a marked improvement in their rugby and some schools have produced a number of Craven week players at all levels over the past few seasons.
- A Pirates invitational team is then selected from the competition and those players play for the u19 club team in the 2nd half of the season.
- Pirates aim to grow the tournament in the next 2 years and hope to get a key sponsor for the tournament.
