The South Turned The Tables After Day 2 Of The Noord/Suid Festival
Day 2 saw the South turning the scoring table by winning 6 of the day’s 9 matches. The weather played along and it was a comfortable warm and dry day.
The day again delivered some high level and very exciting rugby with some of the South teams such as Paarl Gim showing why they are currently ranked No1 in the country by playing very slick and well-structured rugby comfortably beating Monnas 41-19.
The most exciting match of the day, however, especially from the host’s perspective, was the Affies vs Paul Roos match where Affies were the deserved victors by beating Paul Roos 24-18 in a hard-fought match showing that they will be no pushover when they will be facing their opponents later in their season.
19h00 Affies 24-18 Paul Roos - Affies Is Back With A Well-deserved Victory Over Paul Roos
The match started with Affies putting Paul Roos under pressure and forcing a penalty in their half which was successfully kicked to open the scoring tally at 3-0. Paul Roos soon attacked Affies’ try line but their defence held up well. Affies forced another penalty in Paul Roos’ half which was successfully kicked to increase their lead to 6-0.
Paul Roos proved that their driving maul was dangerous as they again relentlessly attacked the try line of Affies but the Affies defence was again solid and they played themselves out of trouble. They then forced Paul Roos back into their quarter and scored a brilliant try out wide after good forward attacking play on the Paul Roos try line.
Affies forced another penalty just inside the Paul Roos half which was successfully kicked to increase their lead to 14-0. Paul Roos was soon thereafter awarded a penalty which they converted into their first points by kicking for poles and scored a try beating the Affies defence out wide taking the halftime score to 14-8.
Affies opened their second-half scoring tally with a successful penalty kick. Paul Roos soon replied with a penalty kick of their own. Affies then scored a brilliant try after repeatedly attacking the Paul Roos try line. An Affies player received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle with 13 minutes left on the clock. Affies however absorbed the pressure from Paul Roos with very good defence but was punished by an intercept try by Paul Roos. Affies however remained in control of the match deservedly beat Paul Roos 24-18.
17h30 Monnas 19-42 Paarl Gim - Monnas Beaten By A Very Slick and Polished Paarl Gim
Gim started the first half on fire with two well-worked tries in quick succession beating the Monnas defence out wide. Monnas then managed to play into Gim’s half and scored a converted try to take the score to 10-7. Gim responded with another well-worked try out wide. They then camped on the Monna’s try line and employed their effective driving maul to cross the line twice but the Monnas defence held up well.
Monnas then attacked into Gim’s half but Gim absorbed the pressure well and gained territorial advantage again with clever tactical kicks to the line. Gim scored a try with another effective driving maul from the lineout to take the score to 22-7 and then continued to pin Monnas in their half with clinical and structured play. Gim slotted a penalty kick to increase their lead to 25-7 at halftime.
Monnas started the second half with good possession and scored a try after a strong driving maul of their own. Gim however hit back with slick handling during good attacking phase play into Monnas’ half forcing a penalty lineout from where they scored another devastating driving maul try to take the score to 32-12. Monnas replied with another converted try after good forward play in Gim’s quarter.
Gim however took control of the game again and pressured Monnas back into their half from where they scored another driving maul try from a penalty lineout. Monnas seemed to have no way of countering their clinical driving mauls. Gim scored again after some more clinical and slick handling by their backline which outplayed the Monnas’ defence out wide. Gim deservedly won the match 42-19.
16h00 EG Jansen 05-26 Oakdale - Oakdale Outplays EG Jansen
Oakdale immediately applied the pressure to EG Jansen from the kick-off keeping them pinned in their half. They scored a try for their efforts taking the lead 5-0. EG Jansen briefly played themselves out of their half but was soon u der pressure again with Oakdale scoring another try with 15 minutes left in the half increasing their lead to 12-0. EG Jansen again managed to play into Oakdale’s half and a yellow card was given to Oakdale for cynical play in a ruck in their half.
This provided EG Jansen with an attacking opportunity close to the Oakdale try line but they were unable to score. Oakdale absorbed the pressure and countered by scoring another converted try to take the scoreline to 19-0. EG Jansen then fought themselves into Oakdale’s half again and scored a try at the halftime break to open their score at 19-5.
The second half saw EG Jansen playing more and better rugby with the majority of the possession. Oakdale in turn found themselves defending in their half against some driving mauls by EG Jansen however their stronger pack of forwards prevented any good go forward by EG Jansen. Oakdale managed to play themselves out of their half on a few occasions scoring a try after they easily beat the EG Jansen defence out wide beating them 26-5.
14h30 Helpmekaar 34-36 Durbanville - Durbanville Just Barely Outmuscles Helpmekaar In A Close Fought Battle
Durbanville drew first blood with a penalty kick early in the half. Both teams settled into a high tempo match and Helpmekaar scored the first try after good pressure play in Durbanville’s half. Durbanville absorbed the pressure and responded by scoring two tries and a penalty to take the score to 17-7.
Helpmekaar started using their much heavier forward pack to get across the game line and set up a good platform for another try. Durbanville however increased their lead to 20-12 after a penalty kick. Helpmekaar again used their powerful forwards to pressure Durbanville in their quarter and draw in defenders which created space out wide for another try scored by their backline, The halftime score was 20-19 in favour of Durbanville.
The second half saw Helpmekaar employing the same tactic as in the first half and scoring 3 points with a penalty kick to take the lead for the first time in the match at 22-20. Although it appeared that Helpmekaar started to take control of the match with Durbanville under constant defensive pressure, Durbanville managed to retake the lead 22-23 with a penalty kick and increase that lead 22-26 with another penalty kick.
Helpmekaar reclaimed the lead 29-26 with a converted try with 10 minutes left on the clock. The tight battle between the teams continued with Durbanville slotting a long-distance penalty kick to level the score 29-29 with 4 minutes to go. They then scored a brilliant converted try running from within their half and beating the defence with good interplay between the backs. Helpmekaar not giving up scored a try in the last seconds but Durbanville won the match 36-34.
13h00 Glenwood 37-26 Noordheuwel - Glenwood Too Strong For Noordheuwel In The End
Noordheuwel established an early 6-3 lead within 8 minutes of the first half. They soon after scored a converted try against the run of play when the centre collected a loose ball in Glenwood’s half and scored under the uprights to take the score to 13-3. Glenwood soon replied with a try of their own to take the score to 13-10 when their outside backs beat the Noordheuwel defence out wide.
Glenwood was intent on running the ball to their speedsters in the backline to avoid the heavier Noordheuwel forward pack. A successful penalty kick by Glenwood drew the score even at 13-13 with 17 minutes left in the half. A yellow card and penalty issued against Glenwood allowed Noordheuwel to kick 3 points which they followed up with another 3 point penalty kick soon after to take the score to 13-19. Glenwood however came back late in the half to score a try just before the whistle to take the halftime score to 18-19.
Glenwood took the lead early in the first half with a converted try after pressure play in Noordheuwel’s quarter. Noordheuwel replied with a clever cross-kick in Glenwood’s quarter which was collected and led to a try in the corner. Another yellow card was issued to a Glenwood for foul play but an intercept try under the uprights by them increased their lead to 32-19. Noordheuwel played into Glenwood’s quarter and managed to score a try from a penalty lineout.
With the score at 32-26 Glenwood made a brilliant break down the outside to score another try. Soon after they broke the Noordheuwel midfield defence to score another try taking the game away from Noordheuwel with 44-26 lead. The final score was 44-31 in favour of Glenwood.
