SARU CEO Jurie Roux confirmed during an online media briefing that during 2020 the only chance that the Springbok has of playing international rugby would be either a Rugby Championships in New Zealand bubble or alternatively in Europe.
No international rugby is planned for the rest of 2021 due to restriction on travel and closures of South Africa's borders. SARU does not expect that the South African borders will open before October to enable a "normal" Rugby Championships
“All other matches for the Springboks are probably not in consideration at this stage," said Roux
“We are not planning on hosting any international games in South Africa this year.
“Our best chance is the Rugby Championships in New Zealand and if that doesn’t materialise, our alternative option is possible going to the Northern Hemisphere to play Tests.”
Roux also explained that the release of international players during August, September, October and November in an ever-increasing congested global roster is also problematic at this stage.
“Hopefully in the next two weeks, we will be able to announce 2020 plans."
