Looking ahead to Griffons on Friday, the Lions Currie Cup head coach Mziwakhe Nkosi is adamant about finishing the campaign on a high. Nkosi was left gutted following his team’s 21-29 defeat to the Sharks during the Currie Cup Round 13 clash at Kings Park on Saturday.
“We now have to aim for the highest possible finish outside the play-off spot so that’s the motivation for us going into Friday against the Griffons. As we near the end to our campaign, we are grateful to the guys who have put their bodies on the line for the better part of fourteen weeks but disappointed that we could not attain a play-off spot which for a franchise like ours is a prerequisite,” he said
“I’m gutted that we have not made the playoffs. Making the Currie Cup playoffs was a prerequisite for the franchise so I’m truly disappointed with the end result of the game.
“We had a good first half by starting quickly off the blocks but too many errors towards the end of the first half allowed them back into the game… It was a dog fight from there on. At the end of the day, it’s all about execution and finishing off chances but we had good plans ahead of today and feel we did well in nullifying their kicking game as well as stopping their maul attack. Our discipline and execution let us down."
“We spent a considerable amount of time in the second half in their half or 22 and didn’t take the changes. They dealt with the pressure, got the win and that is why they are top of the log.
