Salmaan Moerat says he will take a leaf out of former DHL Stormers captain Steven Kitshoff’s book and let his actions speak louder than his words as he prepares to lead this team in the upcoming Vodacom United Rugby Championship season.
Speaking at the unveiling of the DHL Stormers’ home and away kits for the new season, Moerat said he definitely wanted to try and emulate Kitshoff’s quiet authority and humble confidence in his own captaincy this season.
“Steven Kitshoff is a fantastic leader and player. What Kitsy really did well and which speaks to his personality as well is that he often led by example. He never really spoke much. That’s definitely something that I’ll take from him. If you play well yourself then that’s half your job as a captain done. I’ll be focused on that,” Moerat said.
Kitshoff, a former stalwart for the Cape Town team, will run out for Irish giants Ulster in the new Vodacom United Rugby Championship season.
Moerat also said the current squad is filled with strong leaders.
“This is a great bunch of players to lead. There is a good mixture of experienced players and youngsters coming through and this squad is very excited. We also have a few exciting games coming up in the Investec Champions Cup such as La Rochelle here at home. The leadership group within the team is also very experienced. That makes my job easier at the end of the day.”
