Level Four’s Implications On Rugby In South Africa

Since the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, last night that an Adjusted Alert Level 4 will apply nationally from 28 June 2021 several rumours regarding the Georgia and B&I Lions tour started doing the rounds.

According to the Government Gazette No 11299 that was published after the President's speech, the following regulations will be in place which will affect rugby in South Africa:

a) Sporting activities, including both professional and non-professional matches, by recognised sporting bodies, are allowed, subject to strict adherence to the times of operation as provided.

b)  No crowds will be allowed

c) Every person is confined to his or her place of residence from 21h00 until 04h00 daily.

Therefore, no changes to the dates of fixtures for the various national competitions or the international games are expected. The matches scheduled to start @ 19h00 will have to be moved to earlier times in order to ensure that all people "attending" will be able to reach their homes before the curfew start @ 21h00.

Club rugby can continue as normal, however, most provinces have already suspended club rugby and according to sources the various unions will monitor the situation before allowing club rugby to resume.

Rugby at schools is still suspended subject to the Department of Basic Education decision to lift the suspension. Non-contact training is allowed at schools.
