The Blitzboks will have to beat all-comers at Stade Louis II in Monaco on 21-23 June to earn their Olympic Games Paris 2024 ticket in the final World Rugby Sevens Repechage, World Rugby announced on Friday.
The tournament represents the last chance for teams to earn a highly coveted place at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, with 22 of the 24 teams confirmed. Just one men’s team and one women’s team will earn the right to line up at the Stade de France in Paris.
The prestigious event returns to Stade Louis II in Monaco, which also hosted final qualification events prior to the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
The Blitzboks will face amongst others regular HSBC SVNS teams Canada, Great Britain and Spain, with Brazil, Chile, China, Hong Kong China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Uganda the other contestants.
The Springbok Women's Sevens squad already booked their place amongst the world's elite rugby players and will contest their very first Olympic Games.
Rugby Sevens is set to provide an unforgettable curtain raiser at Stade de France as the first sport to kick off the Olympic Games in Paris on 24 July 2024.
Monaco is no stranger to South African rugby and an established multicultural youth empowerment programme between the SA Rugby Legends Association and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, has seen regular exchanges between the two giving age group sevens players from each country opportunities to visit each other's shores.
The World Rugby event, which will be hosted by the Monaco Rugby Union in partnership with the Monegasque government will take place over three days from 21-23 June.
Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco said: "It is a great honour to be hosting the Olympic qualification tournament in Monaco for the third time in a row. Rugby sevens is playing an increasingly important part in the Principality and we are delighted to be part of this wonderful adventure. We wish the 2024 Olympic qualification tournaments great success."
