With only a few matches played in the KZN Region the excitement level in this region was not that high. Northwood managed another loss against the visiting Parktown going down 7-33 with Sarel Cilliers just beating Ferrum 26-20 in a very exciting and close match.
The big one in Pietermaritzburg DHS did the unthinkable by beating the hosts Maritzburg College 48-31. It was a memorable afternoon for “School” at Goldstones on Saturday as DHS romped home to a resounding 31-48 victory over their oldest rivals, Maritzburg College. What made the victory even sweeter was that when DHS beat College on Goldstone in 1999, Scott Mathie, the current 1st XV Rugby Coach, played scrum-half for the winning team, and Alan Norton, current Deputy Head Master, was the 1st XV Coach!
What was billed as a “cracker” before the game was certainly living up to the hype. The 2nd half was expected to be another closely fought contest but proved to be something else entirely as DHS turned in 15 minutes of mayhem to take the game away from College. It was a big victory for Durban High School and will be remembered for a long time yet. A fantastic showcase for schoolboy rugby!
