With the EPCR Challenge Cup pool stage now finished, we reflect on the notable individual defensive statistics from the first four rounds of fixtures this season and find that Toyota Cheetahs and Benetton Rugby players were to the fore in both categories.
Turnovers – Jeandré Rudolph (9)
The Toyota Cheetahs back-row forward ended ahead of Benetton flanker Manuel Zuliani by three, with six players, including Rudolph’s teammate, flanker Daniel Maartens, in third place on five. Rudolph’s and Maartens’ efforts enabled the South African side to grab the last qualifying slot from Pool B for the Round of 16, where they will travel to RC Toulon on April 1.
Tackles – Michele Lamaro (54)
The Benetton flanker is just one tackle ahead of Toyota Cheetahs back-row forward Friedle Olivier, with Bath Rugby hooker Tom Dunn a distant third on 46, all from four matches. Italian international Lamaro’s tally helped Benetton to three wins and second place in Pool B, which earned them a Round of 16 home tie against Connacht Rugby on April 1.
