Ivan Van Rooyen Optimistic About Emirates Lions Chances In EPCR Challenge Cup

Emirates Lions head coach, Ivan Van Rooyen said he is optimistic about his side’s chances in the EPCR Challenge Cup following a convincing 43-35 win over Section Paloise.

“It was important for us to get the first win. It was important for us to get off to a good start and getting the five points was vital.

"I've seen that Montpellier really had a good result against Ospreys, that's our next game in the EPCR. Another good challenge for us away, and then we've got the Dragons back home."

Van Rooyen said they value both competitions equally.

"Currently we'll take it game for game. I see the Stormers have left behind quite a bit of their players, so they obviously also put a big focus and emphasis on next week, so a big South African derby just before Christmas."

Van Rooyen said they were aware of the possibility of replaying the match after was interrupted after just 55 minutes of play..

“We were aware of it, we know European laws are 60 minutes and in South Africa we’re used to it being 40 minutes."

“We thought at that moment we were busy clinching the match and taking it away from them, but we also expected once we returned to the field at 55 minutes you’d expect to see out the final 25 minutes.”

Van Rooyen said they concentrated on passing and on the defence following their two losses against Munster and the Ospreys.

"I think we were a lot better there. In the areas that we want to address, on attack, the ability to see pictures and go there.

"Every game and review will have a lot of stuff to work on, but I think in general, after we landed on Tuesday and only had a Thursday session, I think it was a decent performance against a really good team."
