Hurricanes Cruise To A Win Against Chiefs

The Hurricanes have defeated the Chiefs 25-18. This first win to the Hurricanes came from some impressive defensive work, given they were down a man for almost 30 minutes of the game overall and that the Chiefs had the majority of the possession. Barrett's value was immense from the backline and with the boot. Despite Yellow and Red cards, the Hurricanes held their nerve and showed consistency across the two halves.

The Hurricanes scored an early converted try to lead 7-0. The rest of the first quarter was a ding dong battle between two teams running the ball at every opportunity. With the score 7-3 after 20 minutes, it is game on.

The Chiefs did not use their "statistical" dominance in the first half. Although they got a good amount of possession and consistently pushed in the attack, a combination of too many turnovers and strong defence from the Hurricanes resulted in the Chiefs only scoring one converted penalty. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, used every opportunity they got and go into the second half with a 20-3 lead.

The third quarter a bit of nothing with the Chiefs still not able to convert possession into points with the Hurricanes' defence not leaking anything. The Hurricanes again showed they know how to convert the slightest of opportunities going into the final 20 minutes with a 25-6 lead.

A red card and a penalty try reduced the Hurricanes lead to 25-13 which set the Chiefs on fire. However, 10 minutes of attack again did not produce any points to the Chiefs. The Chiefs were their own worst enemy with possession and territory in their favour but they gave away nine turnovers and had repeated opportunities wasted deep in attack. The Chiefs scored a long-distance try with 2 minutes to go that reduced the Hurricanes lead to 25-18 which was the final score

The Chiefs have a bye next weekend while the Hurricanes will face the Highlanders.
