After a spirited performance against Clifton last weekend, Kearsney fronted up against a far more formidable foe in Hilton College this weekend. The visitors started the game fast and within the first 13 minutes had crossed the whitewash three times, to be leading 19-0 after the first quarter.
Kearsney’s Doan Nel was next to add points to the scoreboard with a well-taken penalty from 45m out, to put the One Stripes on the scoreboard.
The half ended with Hilton scoring again from a penalty move 5m out from the Kearsney goal line, giving them a 29-3 lead at the break.
Kearsney started the second half with a different urgency and, despite trying to up the tempo of the game with a number of quick taps, failed to do much damage to Hilton’s defensive line. The visitors scored again after a quick tap gained them momentum, which narrowed the Kearsney defence, and allowed them to expose the space on the edge with some neat handling.
Hilton went on to score a further three tries, before Bhuko Hlwatika crossed for Kearsney’s first and only try of the game, after some good transitional play between backs and forwards in the last play of the match.
Hilton’s dominant performance was reflected in the final 53-10 score.
