Witteberg High School recently announced the first phase of its new sports academy. The Witteberg Sports Academy, which is part of the school's vision to empower the rural community, will operate autonomously from the school with its own management but in close cooperation with the governing board of Witterberg High School.

The first phase of this project will see the rugby academy officially opening in 2017. Gabrie Labuschagné (chairman), Christo van der Nest (public relations officer), Brendon Shields (skills development) and Leon Taljaard (sports management) is some of the early appointments.

The appointment of Hans Coetzee, ex Monnas Director of Rugby, as Director of Rugby must be the most significant appointment announced up to date. Hans needs no introduction to anybody in the South African schoolboy circles. His expertise, experience and technical analysis of the game, along with his coaching skills, evaluating players and developing coaches are widely recognised and respected.

The school also started in December 2016 to convert its gymnastics hall in a comprehensive conditioning centre which aims to support all sporting codes in preparing the athletes to compete at the highest level in South Africa. With this development, Witteberg High School aims to provide the tools to enable the school and children an opportunity not to only compete at the highest level but also to excel at this level.
