Grey College issued an early warning to the other South African schools who have their eyes on being named the top 1tXV for 2023.
Although some players were missing on their tour to the World School Festival, Grey College lost in the final 10-22 to Hamilton Boys High. However, it was the talent on display at the festival that caught the attention of the South African "hopefuls". Grey College showed that they will remain loyal to their fast gameplan combined with superior fitness, however, a massive and brutal pack of forwards could add some extra spice.
Grey College will play four matches before travelling to Pretoria to attend the Noord/Suid Festival. However, Grey's first big test will be at the Graeme College festival where they will face Marlow Landbou. Marlow showed in 2022 that they will be one of the top 1st XV's in the Eastern Cape if not the best.
Thereafter, Paarl Gim awaits at the Noord/Suid Rugby Festival in the main match of day 1. This game could be the decider of the 2023 season. Maritzburg College should not pose a big problem in their second game at the Festival.
Outeniqua follows the trip to Pretoria. A lot is expected from the Outeniqua 1stXV which apparently also includes an ex-Grey College player up front which could add a little spice to that match.
At the Wildeklwer Rugby Festival, two big tests await Grey College. Garsfontein on Saturday and Stellenberg on Monday.
The Wildeklawer is followed by four weeks of all-out action including Selborne, Paarl Boishaai, Affies and Monnas. Apart from Selborne the other opponents during this month of "madness" will all see themselves as credible teams to end 2023 as the number 1 1st XV.
It is also important to note that Grey College will play 8 of the Top 10 schools according to the Ruggas.co.za ranking, while Outeniqua, Grey High, Selborne and Stellenberg are top 20 schools.
