Garsfontein hosted Waterkloof on Saturday and cruised to a 50-21 win. The win also "secured" the Pretoria Cup. Garsfontein has already beaten Affies and with their match against a struggling Menlopark scheduled for the coming weekend, the Garsfontein supporters can put the bubblies in the fridge already.
Both teams had a nervous start and struggled during the first minutes of the match to find their rhythm, however, a mistake by Waterkloof in controlling a high kick led to Garsfonteins' first try after eight minutes of play which was followed by another two quick tries in minutes. Garsfontein continued their dominance and extended their lead to 17-07 after 20 minutes of play.
Both teams scored a try each during the second quarter with Garsfontein leading 22-14 at the halftime break. Although Garsfontein dominated Waterkloof clawed their way back into the game and scored their second try in the last seconds of the first half which was a just reward for their "domination" during the last ten minutes of the first half.
The third quarter was an even affair however Garsfontein used their opportunities more effectively and added two unanswered tries to extend their lead to 43-21 with fifteen minutes left to play. Both teams had their opportunities but the well-structured defence of Garsfontein kept Waterkloof from scoring deserved points.
Garsfontein added their eighth try with eight minutes to go in the match extending their lead to 50-21 which was also the final score.
Unfortunately for Garsfontein their ranking on the Ruggas.co.za 1stXV rankings will not improve from the current 3rd position as their only opponents that can earn them more ranking points will be against Monnas in the NoordVaal cup league game and also the final.
Garsfontein also showed in the u14 age group that the planned revival of their junior teams shows an improvement already although a lot of work is still to be done.
