Garsfontein 1stXV Beat Fumbling Affies 1stXV


In a highly anticipated match, Garsfontein hosted Affies for the first time since 2010 and he action on the field did not disappoint. Affies maybe guilty of losing the game as they dominated for most of the game while Garsfontein used their opportunities to keep the scoreboard ticking over to win their first match ever against their visitors with 20-19.

Garsfontein started like a house on fire and after a horrible defensive error by Affies Garsfontein's fullback, Michail Damon scored the first points of the match with a great try. Garsfontein stormed into the lead with 07-00 after just six minutes of play. Affies looked at this stage a bit rattled and unsure of themselves.

After twenty minutes in the match Affies is enjoying possession and territorial advantage for the last ten minutes, however, could not convert several try scoring opportunities in to points due to last minute errors by the visitors. Affies using the driving mauls to good effect to keep garsfontein pinned in their own 22.

Affies scored their first try after a great break by their inside centre for a just reward to level the score. However, Garsfontein hit back immediately after same passive defence by Affies to score their second try from the kick off. Affies lacking urgency and physicality at this stage of the match, allowing Garsfontein to dominate the collisions and attack with relative ease.

Following several penalties conceded by Affies, Garsfontein converted two penalties to extend their lead to 20-07 which was also the halftime score.

Affies started the second half a lot better and scored the first point of the half with a 5m lineout-maul after within two minutes.

Garsfontein's eightman is sent of with a yellow card for not rolling away, unfortunately for Affies they once again could not convert an attacking opportunity with points, allowing Garsfontein to escape once again.

Affies struck for the second time in the second half with ten minutes to go when winger Stephan Brits ran a good 35 m after some slick handling byu the Affies backline to score in the corner and narrowed the gap to just one point.

Unfortunately for Affies they could not rescue a win with Garsfontein the deserved winners with 20-19
