FNB UJ’s Win Overturned After A FNB CUT Ixias Appeal Was Upheld

The organisers of the Varsity Cup upheld an appeal lodged by FNB CUT Ixias after their loss against FNB UJ in Round 1 of the 2022 competition. FNB CUT Ixias appealed that the five-pointer awarded after the try they scored by flanker Ulrich Stander late in the first half, was in fact a seven pointer.

The Varsity Cup tweaked the scoring system introduced in 2016; under the 2017 rules, tries could be worth five or seven points, depending on the point where the try-scoring move originated. If the try-scoring move originated in the opponents' half, it would count five points. If the move originated in the try-scoring team's own half, two bonus points were awarded and the try would be worth seven points.

The result will now be shown as a draw (44-44) between the two teams with each earning three log points for their efforts.

This is the second time that the result of the match was changed. In 2020 the Shimlas also appealed a five-pointer with the result that a UJ win was changed into a Shimlas win with 26-25.
