Vodacom Bulls' utility back David Kriel said ahead of Friday’s United Rugby Championship Round Five encounter in Scotland that South African-born Duhan van der Merwe is not like “every other wing” and that is why the Bulls will be keeping a close eye on him when they face Edinburgh.
Kriel admitted that they would give van der Merwe special attention.
“I think you have to. He is not like every other wing. He is big, he is strong, and he showed what he can do on the international stage."
“Duhan van der Merwe is a big threat that we have to keep an eye on. “You can label it as ‘special attention’ but we will keep an eye on him.”
“It mainly depends on the weather. A couple of the guys went to watch their game against Connacht this past weekend. It wasn’t as wet as we thought it would be but it was very cold,” Kriel said on what they expect from Edinburgh on Friday at 21:35 (SA Time).
“It was a very kick-dominated game and a lot of contestables.
“We are expecting a good kicking game from them, but they also got a couple of running threats in Duhan van der Merwe and Wes Goosen, so we will keep an eye on that.”
Reflecting on his personal game Kriel said: “I am very happy with No.12, but I think any rugby player would play in any position when given the opportunity.”
“I am very happy with where my game is going at the moment."
“I have been covering a few positions. I am enjoying No.12 and No.13. I enjoyed playing No.13 against the Scarlets and also Ulster. I feel at home at centre and at the moment that is my preference."
“It’s all about knowing what type of player I am and what’s the weaknesses I should stay away from. It’s about me knowing what I am good at and working on that.”
