DHL Stormers will not only be looking to qualify for the Investec Champions Cup Round of 16 in Paris on Saturday against Stade Français Paris but also to book a home draw.
The TOP 14 club have struggled in this year’s tournament, having lost all three games to sit bottom of Pool 4, but they could still qualify for the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16 with a win in front of their home fans if Sale Sharks lose to Stade Rochelais.
Despite sitting second in the pool, DHL Stormers will need at least two points to secure their spot in the Round of 16 and will need a bonus-point win if they want to make sure of home advantage.
Prop Ali Vermaak is looking forward to the test, explaining: “One of the most significant opportunities offered by all the competitions we’re playing in is that one is able to measure and compare yourself against some of the best props in the world, who are, literally, of all shapes and sizes.
“It is no secret that props become a lot harder and tougher to scrum against as they reach their 30s. And with props normally being replaced between 45 and 60 minutes, you need to be on top of your game if you don’t want to be caught on skates when it comes to scrum time."
With Pool 4 on a knife edge, DHL Stormers may have to lean on their impressive pack once more – a group of players Vermaak is proud to be a part of.
“I think it is a combination of things,” he said, explaining why DHL Stormers’ pack is strong. “Having the opportunity to discuss certain techniques on a daily basis with some of the world’s best players in your position, makes life a lot easier.
“Since we’ve been playing together for a few years now, communication during training or games has become a lot easier in terms of understanding and rectification within a short timeframe.”
