u/20 DHL Western Province’s Road To The Final

DHL Western Province U20 have not lost a single game this season and will face the only other unbeaten team in the competition in the final in Johannesburg on Saturday.

With four wins and two draws in the league phase of the season, DHL Western Province finished second on the standings and hosted their semifinal against Vodacom Bulls U20 at Newlands.

A comfortable 42-17 win in that play-off saw them secure a spot in the final against Lions U20, which will kick off at 13h00 on Saturday.

We took a closer look at how they got there, by running through all seven of their games.

DHL WP U20 14-14 Leopards U20

The season got off to a challenging start, with a stalemate against Leopards U20 at Newlands.

The home side scored all their points on the first half and took a seven-point lead into the break, but the Potchefstroom team fought back to level the scores, which meant that the spoils were shared.

Tries from hooker Keagan Blanckenburg and flank Jarrod Taylor showed signs of a promising forward pack, but Leopards U20 managed to score against the run of play near the end to salvage a draw.

DHL WP U20 63-0 Eastern Province U20

Following a frustrating start to the campaign, DHL Western Province U20 bounced back in fine style, scoring 11 unanswered tries on their way to a resounding 63-0 win against Eastern Province U20 in Despatch.

A hat-trick from fullback Duran Koevort, a brace of tries from flyhalf Sacha Mngomezulu and further five-pointers from skipper Dylan de Leeuw, flank Romuald Ntumba, Jarrod Taylor, wing Rethabile Louw and replacement front-rowers Mauritz Swart and Lamla Nunu saw the visitors stamp their authority.

DHL WP U20 scored four unconverted tries in the first half, with the wind making things very difficult off the kicking tee, and followed that up with a further seven tries after half-time.

DHL WP U20 17-11 Vodacom Bulls U20

If the match in Despatch got the team up and running, the North-South derby at Newlands was the match in which DHL WP U20 announced themselves as contenders.

Vodacom Bulls U20 came to Cape Town on top of the standings but were denied in the end after a typically tough battle.

A try in each half and a penalty from Sacha Mngomezulu was enough for DHL WP U20 to take the win, with prop Corne Weilbach and centre Ruben Labuschagne crossing the whitewash.

Perhaps most impressive was the resolute defence, which showed that these players were willing to put their bodies on the line for the team.

DHL WP U20 24-24 Lions U20

A second draw, but this one coming against their eventual opponents in the final on their home turf up in Johannesburg.

DHL WP U20 were under pressure early on and went into half-time trailing by 10 points, but came out firing at altitude in the second half, scoring three tries after the break to salvage a dramatic draw.

With Jarrod Taylor having scored in the first half, hooker Lukhanyo Vokozela, fullback Duran Koevort and wing Rethabile Louw all crossed for tries in the second half as DHL WP U20 showed that they can never be counted out against the table-topping Johannesburg outfit.

This result means that the final, which will be played at the same venue, is set up nicely between the two top teams in the competition.

DHL WP U20 48-21 Cell C Sharks U20

Back on home turf, DHL WP U20 scored seven tries on their way to a convincing win against the Durban outfit.

That man Jarrod Taylor opened the scoring once again and they followed that up with further tries from his fellow loose forward Romauld Ntumba and wing Paschal Ekeji to give them a slender 20-18 lead at half-time.

However, it was one-way traffic in the second half, as the home side scored a further four tries to a solitary penalty from the Durban outfit to cruise to a big win in the end.

DHL WP U20 64-14 Toyota Free State U20

Needing a big win to secure home advantage in the semifinals, DHL WP U20 delivered in style, scoring nine tries in Bloemfontein.

It was another dominant performance to end the league phase of the season on a high and take some valuable momentum into the knock-out rounds.

There were some familiar faces on the scoresheet as Jarrod Taylor, Keagan Blanckenberg and Ruben Labuschagne all crossed for tries.

There was also time for replacements Ebenezer Tshimanga and Isaiah Wharton to both cross for doubles, which underlined how strong the visitors finished the match.

DHL WP U20 42-17 Vodacom Bulls U20

A second win against their northern rivals at Newlands saw DHL WP U20 continue their unbeaten run and book their place in the final.

A hat-trick from imposing wing Ebenezer Tshimanga was the headline act, but it was a polished team performance that saw them claim a comfortable 42-17 victory.

A try just before the break saw the home side take an 18-7 lead into half-time and they drove their advantage home in the second half.

Apart from Tshimanga’s three, there were also tries for Ruben Labuschagne, Romauld Ntumba and Vernon Matongo as they secured their place in the final next week.
