The Western Province won their first game (47-28) of the 2020 SARU u/21 Championship against the Cheetahs with a much-needed bonus point. Both the Cheetahs and Western Province have a mathematical chance to still qualify for the final. A bonus-point win by Western Province over the Lions on 25 October however, will guarantee Western Province a place in the final against the Blue Bulls.
The Western Province opened their account after just six minutes of the game and continued to dominate during the first quarter to lead 14-7 after 20 minutes. With 20 minutes left in the first half, the Western Province scored two tries in quick succession to extend their lead to 26-7. Although the Cheetahs replied with a try of their own the Western Province continued to dominate proceedings and lead 31-14 at the halftime break.
The Cheetahs looked a lot better at the start of the second half. A great try by the Cheetahs, unfortunately, was immediately followed by an error at the kick-off which allowed Angelo Davids to scored his third try of the match for Western Province. Free State scored their fourth try shortly thereafter, to narrow the gap to 28-36.
The pace of the fourth quarter slowed down a lot as the Cheetahs set up camp in the Western Province half. Two converted penalties by Western Province took the win out of the reach of the Cheetahs. The Western Province deservedly the winners with 47-28.
The Cheetahs can look back at the game as a game lost due to inexcusable lapses of concentration throughout the game which cost them points, however a five-star performance by Western Province that could just help them to a place in the finals.
