Coach Hawies Fourie's assured the media two weeks ago that all the players at the Toyota Cheetahs have committed themselves to Bloemfontein. However, it was reported that more players are set to jump ship.
The announced departure of Reniel Hugo leaves the Cheetahs without six first-class locks since the Cheetahs was kicked out of the Pro14 Championship earlier this year.
Reniel Hugo announced this week that he is leaving the Cheetahs. Although he did not disclose any of his future plans, rumours are that he will join the Cell C Sharks. Although the 30-year-old Hugo did not represent the Cheetahs that much, the departure of any lock at this stage is detrimental.
Carl Wegner, Cheetahs captain also announced his departure to Benetton recently. Other locks that left Bloemfontein are Sintu Manjezi and Walt Steenkamp who was contracted by the Vodacom Bulls, JP du Preez joined the Sale Sharks and Ian Groenwald joined Valence Romans in France.
