Cell C Sharks Keeping Rainbow Cup Hopes Alive With Bonus Point Win Against Lions

The Emirates Lions hosted the Cell C Sharks on Saturday in Johannesburg. The Emirates Lions was in control for the first 10 minutes of the game after which the Sharks took over complete control to secure a win with 33-21.

The game next Saturday between the Sharks and the Bulls in Durban will decide who will travel to Italy for the Pro14 Rainbow Cup on the 19th of June 2021.

10:41 Andre Warner scored the Lions first points after he surprised the Sharks with a quick tap and go from a penalty. The Lions rewarded for a period of sustained pressure on the Sharks' try-line, (07-00).

14:45 Kerron van Vuuren's try was a quick replay by the Sharks. A well structured and controlled driving maul by the Sharksgave them the opportunity to level the scores, (07-07).

20:00 The Lions dominated territory and possession during the first quarter of the game. The scrums at that stage fairly even with the Lions, just maybe enjoying a small advantage.

30:00 The first ten minutes of the second quarter saw the momentum moving in favour of the Sharks. The Sharks set up camp in the 22m of the Lions for the last ten minutes.

31:50 Kerron van Vuuren score the Sharks second try from the back of yet another driving maul. Just reward for 12 minutes of domination in the red zone of the Lions, (07-12).

38:47 Phepsi Buthelezi scored the Sharks' third try to extend their lead, (07-19).

45:18 Len Massyn goes over for the Lions to score their second try of the match after spending five minutes in the red zone of the Sharks, (14-19).

40:00 The Sharks in control of the game although the Lions scored in the 45th minute of the first half to narrow the Sharks lead to 19-14.

47:05 Makazole Mapimpi jinxed his way from outside the Lions 22m to score the Sharks' bonus point try. The Lions normally great defence is starting to look a bit battered, (14-26).

56:00 PJ Botha scores the Lions third try after a driving maul. This try brought the Lions within striking distance of the Sharks total with 20 odd minutes still to go, (21-26).

60:00 With 20 minutes to go the Lions, known for their stellar last 20 minutes shifted into overdrive. Several replacements were made by both teams at this stage.

70:24 Individual brilliance by Boeta Chamberlain allowed Anthony Volmink to score the Sharks' 5th try. Game set and match, (21-33).
