Springbok and Sharks centre Lukhanyo Am has signed a contract extension with Super Rugby side Sharks. Despite lucrative offers, Sharks captain Am has decided to remain in Durban and signed an extension to his contract that will keep him in South Africa until 2022.
Am joined the Durban-based outfit in 2016 after a successful spell at the Southern Kings. There were high expectations he had to meet in Durban and he did not disappoint. He played a crucial part for the Sharks, helping them reach the quarter-finals of the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Super Rugby seasons. In January 2020, Am was named captain of the Sharks for the 2020 Super Rugby season, replacing the retiring Tendai Mtwararira.
Am made his debut for the Springboks in 2017 and was named in South Africa's squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. South Africa went on to win the tournament, defeating England in the final. Am played a central role in the Springboks' campaign, featuring in six out of seven matches. He assisted South Africa's first try in a Rugby World Cup final.
