“But If We Look Back Now, We Could’ve Taken Those Three Points” – Chris Rossouw

Vodacom Bulls assistant coach Chris Rossouw regretted missed scoring opportunities in their 28-37 defeat to Scarlets on Friday at Parc y Scarlets.

Rossuw admitted that things could have been different for the visitors with better decision-making. The Vodacom Bulls were trailing 28-30 after scoring their bonus-point try with less than 20 minutes left on the clock. After that try and with momentum on their side, the Bulls had a kickable penalty just outside the Scarlets’ 22, which would have put them in the lead. However, they opted for a driving line-out.

Rossouw admitted that the three points might have been the better option. “It was a game of two halves. They say hindsight is an exact science. The dominant sense in that second half maybe got the better of us, instead of going for poles there,” he said.

“We have this principle that if you are dominant and you are up by one or two points then you normally go to the corner to apply more pressure, instead of letting them in after you kick that penalty then, they are on your tryline again.

“But if we look back now, we could’ve taken those three points and got scoreboard pressure, and then rebuilt from there."

“At that stage, we were going very well. I think the guys just thought that converting that into a try would give them even more momentum.”

“Unfortunately we couldn’t convert that play, that maul. If you look back, it’s maybe something we could’ve done differently, but there were games where we did exactly the same and we scored. I thought maybe the guys went on that thought process."
