Regular contenders in the Graeme College Rugby Festival, Brandwag are eager to once again measure themselves in the intense, high-stakes environment of one of the Eastern Cape’s premier school tournaments.
The Kariega powerhouse, boasting strong continuity from last year’s squad, will kick off their campaign against hosts Graeme College in Makhanda before facing perennial challengers Queen’s College on Saturday.
The festival, featuring the Eastern Cape’s top rugby schools along with the exciting addition of St John’s College from Johannesburg, will take place from March 20-22.
Brandwag head of sport Wikus Viljoen expressed his enthusiasm about the opportunity to compete at such a high level.
“Our participation in the Graeme Rugby Festival is a testament to our rich rugby tradition and commitment to excellence,” he said.
“This festival is one of the most respected schoolboy rugby events in the country, bringing together top schools to showcase their talent and passion for the game.”
Meanwhile, 1stXV coach Heine Erasmus emphasised that beyond results, the team’s primary objective was growth.
“Our main goal is to gain valuable experience, improve our execution, and assess where we stand as a team,” Erasmus said.
“We want to see our structures and game plan tested under pressure, ensure our physicality and fitness hold up for the full 70 minutes, and, most importantly, build momentum and confidence for the season ahead.
“Strong performances, regardless of results, will lay the foundation for continued improvement and competitiveness.”
A significant advantage for Brandwag is the number of returning players from last season.
“With so many players back, the team already has established chemistry, a strong grasp of the game plan, and a deep understanding of our systems,” Erasmus said.
“This continuity allows us to refine tactics and execution rather than starting from scratch with an entirely new squad.”
However, he acknowledged the challenge that awaited them in Makhanda.
“Facing Graeme and Queen’s College is always a formidable test. Both teams bring physicality, skill, and a relentless mindset.
“They have strong rugby traditions, and any side that plays against them knows they’re in for a tough battle.”
As the festival approaches, Brandwag’s preparations continue with an intensive programme focused on fitness, game structure, and refining key areas.
“With most of last year’s squad returning, our focus has been on building on existing strengths while addressing areas that need improvement,” Erasmus said.
“The team has been working hard on conditioning, set-piece execution, defensive organisation, and game management to ensure they are physically and mentally ready for the challenges ahead."
