Argentina Second Half Comeback Seals Semi-final Spot

 

The quarter-finals kicked off with a banger in Marseille, where Argentina edged Wales 29-17 for the right to face either Ireland or New Zealand in Saint-Denis in the last four on Friday 20 October at the Stade de France.

The match started at a frenetic pace with both teams creating several opportunities on the attack for both teams. Wales flyhalf Dan Biggar scored Wales' first try of the match after 15 minutes of play. Biggar was put in space to score following brilliant handling and interplay by Wales.

Dan Biggar added a converted penalty to the Wales score to extend their lead to 10-00 after 20 minutes of play.

Argentina started to get momentum on the attack and Emiliano Boffelli converted two penalties during the final two minutes of the match to reduce Wales' lead to 10-06 going into the second half.

Emiliano Boffelli converted two early penalties after just 8 minutes of play in the second half to go 12-10 into the front for the first time of the match.

Wales absorbed a lot of pressure during the first 15 minutes of the first half. Their attack looked a bit toothless until Tomos Williams cut through the middle of Argentina for a brilliant individual try. Wales retook the lead with 17-12.

Argentina continued to apply pressure and launched wave after wave of attacks on Wales' tryline. Eventually, Joel Sclavi bulldozed his way over the tryline to score Argentina's second try,

With Wales desperately attacking, Nicolas Sanchez intercepted a silly pass by Wales to run 50 meters to extend Argentina's lead.

Nicolas Sanchez added a converted penalty in the dying seconds of the match, to secure Argentina's place in the semi-final with 29-17 to face either Ireland or New Zealand in Saint-Denis on Friday 20 October at the Stade de France.
