In what was supposed to be just a match to proceed to the finals Alberton managed to stun their supporters with a very poor effort losing to Dinamika 0-5. On the 20th of May, Alberton won against a struggling Dinamika who had to work very hard to be in the playoffs.
The first 20 minutes saw both teams depending a lot on their forwards who were eager to battle and I suspect hiding some utensils which were used whenever possible. Alberton had serious problems in the line-outs which continued throughout the whole game which cost them several attacking opportunities, and although they were in control come scrum time this did not make up for their poor form in the lineouts.
After continued pressure from Dinamika, their no 8 Venter scored the only points of the match. Alberton came back immediately but unfortunately could not convert pressure into points. Hats off to a Dinamika side that defended like demons.
The second half saw the game opening up a lot, with both teams running the ball effectively but Dinamika using the boot to ensure they play the game in Alberton's half. Alberton chance of winning this battle came virtually to an end when the no4 lock was red carded after his second yellow card for dangerous play.
Alberton should feel that they could have won this game as they were in control the second half but the red card and lack of the ability to break the line cost them dearly. Kallie Grung of Alberton showed exactly why he is representing the Golden Lions at the youth weeks and one can only speculate why Alberton played him on the wing while he was chosen as inside centre for the Lions and could have proved to be the match winner.
But all in all a great day of rugby played by boys who play the game for the right reasons.
