Affies had a brilliant 2022 rugby season ending in Stehan Heymans named Ruggas.co.za's Player of the Year, Ryno van der Merwe named Head of Rugby of the Year and Affies named the 2022 Ruggas.co.za School of the Year.
Even the biggest supporters would have accepted a top ten place in the Ruggas.co.za 1stXV Rankings if they were offered that early 2022, however, ending 4th at the end of 2022 will bring a lot more challenges as well as expectations for the 2023 season.
Affies will not play at the St John's Easter Rugby Festival in 2023 reducing their matches to only 14 for their 1stXV.
Affies u/16s of 2022 only lost to Grey College (21-21), Maritzburg College (15-20) and Paul Roos (03-15) and will bring a lot of excitement and expectations to the senior group while "only" six grade 11 boys represented Affies in 2022. Some great talent will be available to the Affies coaching staff with two or three boys' early favourites to become instant schoolboy rugby stars and SA Schools rugby players in 2023.
Expect Affies Rugby to continue developing their "new" exciting brand of rugby where the speed of play is their biggest weapon and if Ryno van der Merwe is to be believed that Affies Rugby was only performing at 60% of where they are aiming to go, their supporters are in for an exciting ride in 2023.
