A Close Match Expected Between Glenwood And Maritzburg College

The Supa Quick Premier Interschools 10th match for the season moves to the last outpost for a very traditional derby between Glenwood and Maritzburg College at Colleges’ famous Goldstones field in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday the 13th of August.

The first match between the two schools was played in 1921 at Glenwood, which was won 5-0 by Glenwood. College dominated the earlier exchanges from then and has their current winning margin thanks to great teams during the ’50s, ’60s ’70s and ’80s.

Since the late 90s Glenwood has developed into a real rugby powerhouse and has been so dominant the last 10 years that College could only manage one win and 2 draws in the 16 matches played. They did not get to play in 2020 due to the pandemic but did manage to play two matches in 2021, which resulted in a win for each team away from home.

The biggest victory recorded for College over Glenwood was 61-13 at College in 1995. While the biggest victory recorded for Glenwood over College was 57-12 at Kings Park in 2015.

Early season form looks to favour Glenwood once again, but form alone is not always the key to winning such fierce derbies. Passion and willpower sometimes get surprising results. College showed against Affies they have plenty of both and could upset the favourites Glenwood on the day.

Maritzburg College has won ten from their eighteen matches played, however, markedly improved since their loss against Affies which they followed with two good wins against Pretoria Boys High (50-26) and KES (34-30). Glenwood on the other hand won ten from the sixteen games they played this season. The previous encounter between Glenwood and Maritzburg College saw Glenwood winning with just one point (32-22) on 14 May 2022.
