Who Is The Top Schoolboy Rugby Coach?

A major point of discussion in schoolboy rugby circles is the value of a coach. Is a fair and just system available to judge the success of your team's coach? And if so, does it include winning at all costs, getting the best talent, being a role model for his kids, putting academics above performance etc, etc, etc.

Unfortunately, the only yardstick that is currently used is winning, winning percentages and even worse rankings. Most of the times the coaches at the top will be quick to acknowledge his school's, medical staff, coaching staff, commitment from team members and the parents' contributions.

Unfortunately, this "humbleness" open up another can of worms, giving the not so successful coaches, schools and parents the "valid" excuse why their school, team, and child is not "performing" if measured to the top teams' performances in the country.

During our effort to list and "rank" the talent in the country for the first two to three weeks of the 2020 season I decided to "rank" the schools taking the talent available to the coaches into account. We "ranked" the top 50 players in each position and then only used the ranking points of the top 15 boys in each school. If all fifteen players of a school did not make the top 50 we gave that school one point, the same as for the kid that was ranked as number 50.

The "Most Talented" Top 50 1stXV Teams for 2020 are as follow:

1. Grey College

Teams that would normally make the top 50 that is missing is KES, Jeppe, St Johns who did not play any games in 2020. Menlopark who won the 2019 VirSeker had the misfortune to play a Welkom Gim team that was well prepared and Menlo was without several top players.

It would have been interesting if we had a full season this year and could compare it to the results above at the end of the season.
