2

Monnas travelled to Waterkloof for an expected festival of tries and took the wrong turn off ending up at the swimming pool of Waterkloof. Normally the rain puts an end to exciting rugby but this time it provided a match full of action and mistakes.

Monnas started the match on fire putting pressure on Waterkloof from the first whistle and with the educated boot of flyhalf Viljoen camped in the Waterkloof 25. Only desperate defence from Waterkloof kept the Wit Bulle from Krugersdorp from scoring.

Waterkloof, after the initial onslaught from Monnas, started to get hold of more and more possession of the ball allowing their backline to impress with the ball in hand. The first try of the match was scored by Waterkloof's wing Sean du Plooy after pressure on the Monnas try line by Waterkloof resulted in a loose kick upfield which ended with the try in the opposite corner. Ulrich Maritz educated boot converted the try and after a further penalty saw Waterkloof leading 10-0.

Monnas converted a penalty opportunity to trial 3-10 before the referee stopped play due to severe rain and thunder. At this stage, Waterkloof seemed to be in control and on their way to winning this match. After a break of almost 20 minutes play commenced with Monnas using their big forwards to rumble up into Waterkloof's half and after a sniping break by their scrumhalf their lock Christen van Niekerk dived over for a converted try. The score was level at 10-10 when the referee sent the boys to the changing rooms.

The second half will be remembered for the number of mistakes both teams made. Both sides reverting to a kicking game with Monnas maybe winning this battle. Waterkloof was the first to score after a mistake from Monnas resulted in a scrum on Monnas' 22-meter line and after several minutes of pressure, Bradley McGeer loosehead prop of Waterkloof burst over the try line for a converted try. Waterkloof leading 17-10.

The try for Monnas came after the wing of Waterkloof lost the ball forward in a tackle in the middle of the field which was picked up by the Monnas no 6 Larko Lindes who ran all the way to score a converted try to equal the score again at 17-17. At this stage, Waterkloof was applying the pressure and was seemingly on their way to win this match.

With ten minutes to play both sides were kicking for territory when a defender was called in front of the kicker and Monnas received a penalty which was converted by Viljoen to give Monnas the win with 20-17.
