Injury Woes For Cheetahs Before Season’s Opening Matches

The Cheetahs played three "Chukkas" of 20 minutes each against each other on Friday last week as they completed their first week of contact training.

First choice hooker Wilmar Arnoldi fractured his cheekbone and underwent surgery on Saturday. Arnoldi is said to be out of action for three months, a final decision will be made on Friday to determine the recovery period.

The injury to Arnoldi leaves the Cheetahs with only Louis vd Westhuizen, Namibian International as a recognised hooker for the upcoming local competition. Reinach Venter (prop) or Marnus vd Merwe (loose-forward) who both recently moved from playing hooker and can also be used as backup hookers.

Minor injuries to Howard Mnisi (thigh), Aranos Coetzee (ankle) and Reinhardt Fortuin (ankle) also left the field during play. The injuries to Mnisi, Coetzee and Fortuin is said not to be too serious.

Fourie was according to Netwerk24 happy with the first "chukka" but felt that too many mistakes was made during the second and third "chukka". The tempo and intensity also lacked in the last two "chukkas".

Fourie said that hard work is needed before the Cheetahs play warm-up games on 26 September (Kimberley) and 02 October (Bloemfontein) against the Griquas.
